"TAFE in the 21st Century?"
To Australians TAFE is not an acronym; it’s an icon. It’s the place you go to between school and work. It’s the place where you first meet your lifelong mates. It’s the place that shapes your future. It’s THE place you go to for your Vocational Education and Training in Australia.
Despite this winning formula, this TAFE icon has a history of constant change as it bows and bends through the latest government position, the latest review and the latest solution on how to skill the Australian workforce.

TAFE in the reform spotlight
The challenges facing the TAFE sector were spelled out in a number of presentations to the AUSTAFE national conference in Queensland last week.
TDA Director of Policy and Stakeholder Engagement, Pam Caven presented a paper detailing the multiple stages of reform across jurisdictions as they progress toward a contestable, market-driven model of vocational education and training.
The paper argues that few areas of public policy have experienced the scale of change that has been experienced by the TAFE sector in recent years.
A panel session comprising a number of TDA directors, Dianne Murray, Trevor Schwenke, John Hassed, and Kevin Harris, explored the way that TAFE Institutes are going about meeting the financial and operational challenges presented by the new reform agenda.
